HNZLR, renowned for geometric abstraction, was contracted by The Do Lab to design a sculptural stage backdrop and wing scenic within the iconic “Warrior One” tensile fabric membrane. These geometric structures, all right-angle triangles made entirely from framing lumber, were fabricated and built on the Coachella grounds days before the event. HNZLR personally aided in the carpentry and assembly, demonstrating the ability to work between digital process and improvisational flow. Drawings were printed on the fly, hands got dirty, nights were long, fun was had, memories were made.
The wings feature sacred, symmetrical striations drawing the eye to the focal point, while lighting units beneath chase and wash the implied linearity with waves of color. The center triangle houses dual laser units shooting through an offset aperture, keystone rhombi on the bottom two corners, and a perfect square at the apex.
The project remains permanently assembled and was transported to Lightning In A Bottle shortly after as an art installation in a new configuration.
